Michael (Mike) Kelley Obituary

Wimberly, Texas - Michael Guthrie (Mike) Kelley, born Oct. 14, 1941, passed away at his home in Wimberley, Texas on Dec. 22. 2025. He was 81.


Mike was born in St. Louis. Missouri to Woodrow and Margret Kelley of Commerce, Texas. He grew up in Commerce, where he graduated from Commerce High School and then became a graduate of East Texas State University.


Having been an ROTC member, after graduation he served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He then moved to Austin, Texas, where he became a writer for the Austin American Statesman. He had several different writing positions, eventually landing his own humor column which he wrote for 20 years and published a book of his columns titled "My Name's Kelley And That's My Opinion." He retired in 2000.


He is survived by brother Pat Kelley (wife Donna), brother Time Kelley, niece Regan Kelley (partner Jason Keyes), nephew Matt Kelley (partner Jennifer Nunez).


There will be a private service for family only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Commerce Public Library in Commerce, Texas.
