Margaret Faye Blackburn Floyd passed to her heavenly home on Feb. 27, 2021, at Bethany Village in Dayton, Ohio.

She had moved to Dayton to be near her daughter and family seven years ago after living most of her life in Texas.

Margaret was a strong, independent woman whose faith in Jesus, love, and service to others is an example to her family, friends, and community.

She will be missed.

A service to honor her life will be conducted by Reverend Mike Walker on Friday, March 5, 2021, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Mt Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City, Texas. The family will greet friends beginning at 10 a.m.

The second of four siblings, Margaret was born in Mantachie, Mississippi, on Sept. 15, 1920, to Koger Baxter and Zera Moore Blackburn.

During more than 100 years of life, she experienced dramatic changes in the world - from traveling in a horse-drawn wagon to trips in a jet plane. She was always ready for change and determined to make the best of every situation.

Margaret married James Elbert Floyd on Nov. 13, 1939. In the Floyd tradition, she quickly gained the nickname, Mikie, and they were known by many as Mikie and Jeff.

They soon moved to Dallas, Texas, where she worked during the preparations for WWII at North American Aviation. She also worked years later during the mid-1950s at Texas Instruments in transistor assembly and testing. These were the early days of Texas Instruments, when her boss, Mark Shepherd, later the Chairman of TI, would come into the workplace and encourage the employees to take a break if they were tired. She loved working and was a respected employee with many friends.

Although employed for a decade, Margaret was primarily a homemaker assuring her family of love, stability, and plenty of good food. Food was always a way of caring in her life.

Margaret enjoyed Bible study and daily devotions, and her gift was acts of practical service. She cooked countless meals for family and friends while being involved with meals for church events.

When she moved back to Commerce, Texas, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Oak Manor Nursing Home. She would often prepare a special treat - roast beef sandwich or a dessert - to take to a resident at Oak Manor. If she had been part of a different generation, she would have chosen to be a dietician or nutritionist.

She was also a good seamstress, making most of her daughter's clothes and later a quilt for each grandchild. She loved to garden and nursed many wilting houseplants back to life. She also enjoyed reading, and preferred biographies and history to fiction.

Margaret was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Although she didn't live near her grandchildren, she decided to care for each one by writing letters to them and when they were old enough to travel alone, buying them each a plane ticket to visit her in Texas for spring break. They began a habit of weekly phone calls which the grandchildren continued into her later years. They have great memories of her love and care.

She left an example of a woman who excelled in the traditional role, but was eager to be part of new opportunities.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, James Elbert Floyd, her brother, Daniel Lester Blackburn, her sister Flora Euple Walker, and her sister Ahtrell Rhea Dalton. She is survived by her daughter, Sherra Jean Crawford and husband Mike of Dayton, Ohio. She is also survived by her grandchildren Mark Christopher Crawford and wife Irena of Tirana, Albania, James Michael Crawford and wife Maggie of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Sherra Michele Feeny and husband Charles of Columbus, Ohio, along with eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was a woman who was greatly loved and finished her earthly journey well.
