Virginia's Story

Virginia Mays Arnold Romane, 94, of Rowlett, passed away at The Ivy of McKinney on Friday morning, June 9, 2017. A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at East Mount Cemetery with Rev. Bill Shaddox officiating. Coker-Mathews Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She was born Nov. 27, 1922, in Greenville, Texas, to Seaborn and Lorena Smithey Mays. She attended high school in Greenville and East Texas State University where she was a campus beauty and a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. After college she met and married Bill Arnold, also from Greenville, on Feb. 12, 1943. They moved numerous times before settling in Bryan, Texas, in 1959 where they remained. He preceded her in death in February 1972. She married Dr. Bill Romane in December 1989; he passed away in 1999. Virginia retired from Texas A&M University.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Gary Hefner; son and daughter-in-law Chip and Connie Arnold and Becky and Bill Romane; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a very special cousin, Tillman Smithey, whom she loved like a brother.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church and Bryan Woman's Club for many years. Virginia had many wonderful friends and lived a long and wonderful life. She will be greatly missed.
