Sue's Story

Text size

Precious wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister Sue Layne Walker Heath passed away Aug. 1, 2017, joining the love of her life, husband John Heath. Her family finds comfort in knowing that they are together again.
Daughter of Florence Almeda Lewis and Clark Spencer Walker, Sue was born in Greenville, Texas, graduating from Greenville High School in 1953. Sue Layne met and married John Lee Heath on May 3, 1957, and had four beautiful and devoted children. The Heath family moved to Durant, Okla., in 1962 where Sue served alongside John working and loving college students at Southeastern Oklahoma State University through the Baptist Student Ministry. Sue worked at the Bryan County Election Board for many years, followed by her service to students as secretary for the Upward Bound Program at SOSU. Sue and John spent five years in Vermont, beginning a Baptist student ministry in the Northeast. While she enjoyed working with John in this "adventure," she was thrilled to return to Durant to be near her family at the close of their missionary ministry.
Being a devoted mother, grandmother and sister was the most important job in Sue's life, and she leaves a legacy of love and service through her children and grandchildren. Sue's fierceness, loyalty and abiding commitment to the God that she served every day of her life lives on through the many lives that she touched. Her family is comforted by knowing that she is reunited with her life companion, husband and best friend, John, and her precious mother.
Sue is survived by four children and their families, Rhonie Heath and wife Lori and their children Jacy Nunley and Christopher; Shelli Heath Wright and husband David and their daughters Caitlyn Lacy and Ashli Caroline; Tim Heath and wife Diana and Tim's children John Riley and wife Andrea and their daughters Rhonnie and Weslie; Emily Glover and husband Justin and their children Kaden Neill, Camrey and Kane Mason, Haley and Riley Glover and Diana's daughters Mallory Megee; Mara Clay and husband John and daughter Maci Leigh; Amy Heath Bell and husband Derek Todd and their children Heath Allen and Hallie Jake; Carmen Lacy Walker, Sue's beloved sister and best friend; brother James Edward Walker and wife Betty and their precious children Gina Kilgore, Jamie Van Wie, James Edward Walker Jr., Melissa Wallace, Derek Walker and their spouses and children; brother Terry Mack Welch; sister-in-law Rita Jeffries and husband Jeff and their sons David and Gary; and numerous beloved cousins. Sue's extended family included hundreds of friends and students who have stayed in touch over the years.
Sue's love of family and friends sustained her and lives on in the hearts of those who loved and cherished her.
A celebration of the beautiful life of Sue Layne Walker Heath will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 5, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Speers leading the celebration.
Arrangements are under the direction of Brown's Funeral Service in Durant.
