Louie Gene Monroe passed away Feb. 24, 2017, after a brief illness. He was born to Louie "Gabe" and Elizabeth Phillips Monroe on Oct. 8, 1937, in Sherman.
He married Jean Hill on Oct. 5, 1957 in Wolfe City.
Gene retired from Central Freight Lines. Gene was a long standing and active member of the Board of Directors of Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
He was often seen working at the cemetery or supervising the grounds crew as they went about their daily tasks of keeping the cemetery beautiful. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Wolfe City.
He is survived by his wife Jean; two sons: Barry Monroe of Arlington, and Marty and wife Julie Monroe of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; granddaughter Deanna Tolley, one brother, Dwayne and wife Lenore Monroe of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and one sister Nina Faye Wisdom of Wolfe City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Treva Wallace.
The funeral will be at First Baptist Church in Wolfe City on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at 2 p.m. with Brother Tim Hearn officiating. Visitation was Saturday night at R. W. Owens Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Wisdom, Mark Wisdom, Larry Monroe, Gary Monroe, Randy Monroe, and Matthew Sifuentes.
If so desired, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Cemetery Trust Fund.
