Wayne "Squirrel" Gowin, 81, of Greenville, Texas, peacefully passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017, at his home. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, in the Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Royce Litchfield officiating. Burial will be in Memoryland Memorial Park.
Visitation is today, July 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Squirrel was born in Emory, Texas, on Feb. 25, 1936, to Elmer Gowin and Rachel Wade Gowin. He married Millie Horn on Sept. 25, 1975, in Oklahoma. He retired from E-Systems in 1991 after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Desporado Bowling League and was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed gardening and farming in his retirement, was an avid Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys fan, but most importantly Squirrel will be remembered always as a loving father and husband.
He is survived by three daughters, Tammy Gowin Pierce and husband Gerry Pierce of Irmo, S.C., Lora Gowin of Greenville, and Connie Kinney of Lone Oak, Texas; grandchildren Tabitha Johnson, Elizabeth Bridges, Macey Long, Cody Gowin, Taylor Kinney, Kelsie Gowin, Matt Kinney, and Mason Gowin; great-granddaughter Blake Long, brothers and sisters-in-law Kenny Gowin and wife Doris, Ronnie Gowin and wife Sue, Danny Gowin and wife Sherian, Bo Gowin and Perry Gowin and wife Ruth; numerous nieces and nephews; and his four-legged kids, Bandit, Tim and Tiger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Horn Gowin on Feb. 27, 2006; his parents, daughter Elizabeth Gowin on Nov, 5, 1957; and son Windell Wayne Gowin Jr. on Jan. 27, 2001.
Pallbearers will be Squirrel's nephews, Mike Gowin, Randy Gowin, Donny Gowin, Stephen Gowin, Darrin Gowin and Michael Gowin. Honorary pallbearer will be David Gowin.
