Valera Pernell Hartwell, born Nov. 5, 1914, in Campbell, Texas, peacefully passed away June 26, 2017, in Ramona, Calif., with family by her side.
Her parents, Jake Pernell and Sammi Downing, raised a farming country family of seven children including Valera in Campbell. The country lifestyle that she and her siblings were taught was something she was very proud of.
She married Dow Hartwell in 1932; they welcomed a son in 1933 and a few years later moved to California. They purchased a barber shop, built a life, made friendships, watched their son marry and grandchildren be born.
In 1977 they moved back to Texas where Valera was known as Val at the local YMCA and senior center. Her many talents shone while she enjoyed dancing, playing cards and reconnecting with loved friends and family.
In 2011 she moved back to Ramona, Calif., to be close to family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved and only child, John Kirk Hartwell.
She is survived by her granddaughters, Gail and Cevin; three great-granddaughters and three great-great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered by her stories, her wisdom, sense of humor and love for her family.
She will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at Lynch Funeral Service, Greenville. Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 7, at Caney Cemetery.
