Robert (Bob) Joseph Gunnels, 80, passed away Sept. 9, 2017, at Hunt Regional Hospital in Greenville, after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Gunnels was born Sept. 3, 1937, in Malakoff, Texas, to Joseph and Opal Gunnels.
Mr. Gunnels served his country in service with the United States Army. In 1956, he began his employment with E-Systems in Greenville, and worked on the Big Safari program in conjuncture with the U.S. Air Force for 43 years. He retired in 1999.
Mr. Gunnels was a gifted vocalist and musician, which was his passion and enjoyment. Over the years, he recorded multiple country music albums and opened for Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson. Along with making years of touring appearances, he also made television and radio appearances. He continued his love for music after retirement by sharing gospel music at several locations including serving in nursing homes, providing musical support for the worship services. Mr. Gunnels was a faithful member of Highland Terrace Baptist Church.
Mr. Gunnels was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Gunnels; mother, Opal Gunnels; and daughter, Christie Lynn Gunnels. He is survived by his son, Robert Gunnels and wife Rebecca, and grandson, Christian Gunnels.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 15, at Highland Terrace Baptist Church.
