Owen Ruggles died peacefully in his sleep on June 29, 2017, at the age of 97.
He is survived by his daughter, Sue Nixson of Lake Frederick, Va.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Young of Lone Oak, Texas; four brothers; and two sisters.
He was born in Bellville, Texas, on April 30, 1920, to Albert Ruggles and Lena Bartay. As a teen he started working in Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps and joined the Air Force in 1941. After 27 years, he retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant. He moved to Greenville in the 1960s to work for the defense contractor, Ling-TEMCO-Vought (LTV).
In the 1970s he semi-retired from LTV and followed his lifelong interest in the outdoors, planting and watching things grow, and became the owner/operator of a landscaping business in Greenville. He enjoyed gardening and continued planting peppers and tomato plants in the flower beds around his residence until his death.
In 2000, Owen moved to Arlington, Va., and resided at a Sunrise Senior Living facility to be near his daughter and son-in-law, Amon Nixson.
An interment at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with full military honors is scheduled Nov. 2.
