Michael Thomas Murphy, 65, of Greenville passed away June 12, 2017, at his residence after a lengthy battle with cancer. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, June 16, in the Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel with Rev. James Ralson officiating.
Michael was born in Pittsburg, Texs, on April 28, 1952, to parents Kermit Claude Murphy and Gloria Anne Murphy Dean.
He is survived by his brother, James Murphy of Grand Saline; nephew Christopher Murphy of Crandall; a friend, Kathy Abercrombie of Greenville; and his three beloved cats, Red, Simba and Zilla.
Michael attended Sunset High School in Dallas, Texas, and then served eight years in the United States Army, earning the rank of staff sergeant of a tank crew while stationed in Nuremberg, Germany. There he earned a BS degree from the University of Nuremberg. After his honorable discharge from the service, Michael returned home to Dallas and began working for the Monroe Schnieder Co. as a project manager of large commercial carpet and flooring installations, then opened his own successful flooring business in Dallas; he later moved the business to Idaho. After selling his business in Idaho, Michael returned to Texas, making his home in Greenville. After moving back to Greenville, Michael started working for Wal-Mart. During the next 20-plus years he influenced and touched countless lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
