John T. Wells Jr., 84, of Greenville passed away Jan. 31, 2018, at the Baylor Hospital of Carrollton. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 4, at the chapel of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home with Pastor Charlie Hubbard Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time.
John was born in Greenville, Texas, on Sept. 1, 1933, to John T. Wells Sr. and Maggie Ruth Hedrick. John worked in various jobs throughout his life, such as a printer, cattle raiser, pig farmer, hay operator, Parks and Wildlife, a funeral home attendant, with Dr Pepper, E-Systems, and the City of Mesquite. He was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Garland, also serving as an Odd Fellow, 32nd Degree Mason, and with the Greenville Police Academy, Citizens on Patrol.
John is survived by his stepdaughters, Rebecca Pierce Witt of Lewisville and Laura Pierce Johnson of Greenville; half-brother Lloyd D. Phillips of Arkansas; great-niece Brenda Melton Young; great-nephews Michael Moore and Wesley Moore; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his beloved dogs, Brandy, Holly and Itty Bitty.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Nell Hendley Wells, daughter Cheryl Wells and half-brother Buford Hedrick
Pallbearers will be Justin Mitchell, Cade Mitchell, Greg Johnson, Josh Ford, Tony Mixon and Michael Witt.
