James's Story

Text size

On Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at 12:29 a.m., life changed for the Mayner Family. We lost our amazing husband, father, grandfather and brother.
Eddy Mayner was born Sept. 10, 1944, in Greenville, to James Hoyt and Deron Eddington Mayner, and graduated from Greenville High School in 1963.
During his years at GHS, Eddy was an astounding athlete. He played quarterback for the 1962 team as a junior and for the 1963 team as a senior. He always laughed about the fact that he took his 1963 team to a 1-9 season. Eddy was also an accomplished baseball player, earning numerous awards. He also received a basketball scholarship to Navarro Junior College.
In 1966, Eddy enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Vietnam. He proudly served his country, earning the rank of Sergeant.
Upon returning to the States, he was a member of the U.S. Army baseball team where he received the honor of being named "Most Valuable Player." He eventually was invited to try out for the Chicago Cubs, but declined because he wasn't confident enough in his hitting ability.
In 1969, Eddy became the first agent ever hired by American Service Life Insurance Company. In his forty plus years at ASL, Eddy was awarded Agent of the Year and Manager of the Year numerous times.
In an ASL publication in 1991, the chairman of the company said, "Eddy is proof that dedication and loyalty do pay off. As one of ASL's long-time managers, his abilities as a salesperson and manager, along with his strength to take the good with the bad has made Eddy one of the most successful people in the industry."
In the same article, Jerry Jolley, Eddy's lifelong friend and fellow agent said, "When I was working for Eddy, he was always up when I was down. He would stay up all night with you if that is what it would take to work things out. Let's put it this way, if I were in the Army, I would definitely want him on my side."
On August 9, 1973 Eddy married Ginny Voss. Eddy had a daughter, Kim, born in 1969. The three of them welcomed a second daughter, Courtney, in 1975 and a third daughter, Chelsea, in 1982.
Eddy's survivors include his wife Ginny; daughters Kim Mayner, Courtney Larson and husband Robert, Chelsea Perreault and husband Ray; brother Charlie Mayner; sister and brother-in-law Shannon and Junior Jenkins; brother and sister-in-law Bubba and Anna Voss.
Also surviving, are grandson Hunter Jennings and fiancée Rachel Chamberlain; granddaughters Grayson Farquhar and Layla and Raylee Perreault; and also his new great-granddaugthers, Jessi Jennings and Paisley Jaimes Naylor, named in honor of her great-grandfather.
Eddy was preceded in death by his parents Hoyt and Deron Mayner, Lloyd and Sybil Voss, and brother Gerald Mayner.
We love and adore you. Rest in peace, Sweet Poppa.
Arrangements were handled with Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.
