Helen's Story

Text size

Helen Shorter, 82, left this earth to be with her King and Savior, Jesus Christ, and reunited with her heavenly family on May 19, 2017.
She lived in Greenville, Granbury, Dallas, and Corpus Christi, Texas; as well as being a "traveling gypsy" to various other locations including Ashland City, Tenn., Upper Marlboro, Md., and Nassau, Bahamas, while married to her late husband, Bill, who was in the airline business with Braniff and E-Systems/Raytheon. She was a devoted Episcopalian, served on the Altar Guild and was a member of The Order of the Daughters of the King (DOK) since 1985 where she helped organize Chapters at the Good Shepherd Church in Acton/Granbury and Saint Paul's in Greenville. She also helped establish the Lake Granbury Welcome Service/Newcomers Club in 1978. Helen volunteered at several hospitals and at the Colonial Lodge Assisted Living in Greenville where she chose her final residence.
She enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing card games and spending quality time with her family and friends. She also loved her poodles, collecting angels, watching Hallmark movies and always cheered for the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers.
Helen leaves behind her son, Jerry Joe and wife Gladys of Lake Fork; daughter Jill Davis and husband Michael of Lake Granbury; older sister Willie Bell of Garland; niece Linda Gray and companion Frank Buck of Mesquite; cousin Lan Bell Vothang and husband Hao of Carrollton; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and a great many wonderful friendships.
A memorial service will be held in Helen's honor on Friday, May 26, at 11 a.m. at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in remembrance of Helen Shorter to the Memorial Fund, c/o Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, 8320 Jack Finney Blvd., Greenville, TX 75402.
