Farris Waylon (Poppy) Mims, 79, of Lone Oak, passed away from liver cancer Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, at his residence. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, in the Coker-Mathews Funeral Home chapel. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time.
Mr. Mims was born Jan. 17, 1938, in Hughes Springs, Texas, to Davis Wimberly Mims and Bessie Lee Haun. He married Darlene Windholz on Nov. 27, 1981, in Garland, Texas. In his early years, he worked for the Dallas Morning News, a carpet layer, a truck driver and the last 13 years for Wright Park Golf Course in Greenville, Texas. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was on the U.S.S. Keppler.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Sue Mims; mother-in-law Mary Ann Norman; sons Russell Mims and wife Joie and Michael Crosby and wife Julie; daughters Angie Twedell and husband Mike and Michelle Hanson; brother-in-law Hubert Windholz and wife Tina; sister-in-law Donna Dunham and husband Bob, Becky Hills and husband Mark, Debbie Jurcak, Geneva Mims and Bonnie Mims; grandchildren Holly, Amy, Jessica, Matt, Ashley, Madeline, Brody, Charli, Maggie and Morgan; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; two sisters; father-in-law Hubert Windholz Sr.; and mother of his biological children, Rita Gay Welch.
